Tumors may arise from any structure inside the skull, including the brain and the fibrous membranes surrounding the brain. There are many different types of tumors with a wide spectrum of clinical behaviors, treatments and rates of cure. Brain tumors may cause symptoms as they enlarge such as headaches, visual disturbances, weakness or paralysis of certain muscles and muscle groups, and seizures. Tumors involving the fibrous membranes covering the brain, between the brain and the inside of the skull, usually called meningiomas, may cause similar symptoms.
Brain tumors are usually diagnosed by taking a complete history, doing a physical examination including a neurological examination, and various imaging studies including CTs, MRIs and angiograms. It is imperative that physicians know when signs and symptoms suggest the possibility of a brain tumor. Delay in diagnosis can result in permanent, debilitating injuries as the tumor expands within the skull, and can result in a tumor which was curable at an earlier stage becoming incurable and fatal. Tumors which are almost always curable if they are removed when they are small, may seriously injure the brain, and can even cause death if not diagnosed and treated.
