What you need to know about Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes or Long QT Syndrome
A genetic heart condition, Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome, also referred to as Long QT Syndrome, occurs in children and infants.
The symptoms are fainting or sudden loss of consciousness and even sudden death. Sometimes this occurs during physical activity, but it also may happen upon waking or during sleep. Not everyone shows symptoms, but boys tend to develop this condition at a younger age than girls. Generally it begins in pre-teenage years for boys and around age 14 for girls. However there are cases when this first appears in infants and also in young adults. If properly diagnosed and treated, it typically does not lead to death or serious impairment.
It's easily diagnosed with an EKG. Once diagnosed, beta-blocker drug therapy is usually prescribed. However, failure to properly diagnose or treat this disorder can lead to death.
